The final event of GALLERY GALLERY as we have known it, will take place on June 17th, 2022. “Not with a bang but a whimper.” will be the climactic apotheosis of a ten-year trajectory and of course it will end once more tongue very much in cheek.

Bringing together 50 artists and as many curators, EXPONENTIAL GROWTH will be the most extensive and diverse event in GALLERY GALLERY'S ten-year history, actively forcing the expansion of both the initiative’s and participants’ professional network.

‘Cabinet of Hearts’ - Che Go Eun
01/07/21 - 30/09/21

GALLERY GALLERY is proud to initiate yet another new concept. Next to the short-term projects that are taking place in recent years, GALLERY GALLERY already had launched a concept where each year, one artist will be invited to install a work in the exhibition space that will be exhibited on continuous display spanning all other projects for one full academic year. In addition, GALLERY GALLERY now launches a new concept where each year, one artist will be invited to install a work in direct relation to the public space and will be continuously displayed during summer closing, spanning from the beginning of July to the end of August.

GALLERY GALLERY has invited Che Go Eun (1988, Seoul) to kick off this new series. Influenced by ‘Chaekgado’, a genre of Korean painting from the 18th Century in Joseon dynasty, and ‘Wunderkammer’, the European cabinet of curiosities, Che Go Eun presents ‘Cabinet of Hearts’ (2021). Using digital collage printed on self-adhesive foil complemented with the use of light, the windows giving out to the street will be transformed into a lightbox.

For the upcoming 2021 edition GALLERY GALLERY and Multiplied will join forces. Through this open call they invite artists to send in their proposals. The final selection of artists will be invited to participate in the public moment on the 30th of October 2021.

SwanSong.jpg

SWAN SONG - Ben Van den Berghe & Alexey Shlyk
28-29-30/05/21

Ancient belief has it that before swans pass away, they belt out a final graceful chant. But do they sing their most beautiful song out of sorrow for what has been, or solace for what has yet to come?

‘Swan Song’ is the first installment of Shlyk’s and Van den Berghe’s ongoing research project ‘Virtual Escape’. It explores the disturbing impact of image technology on the necessity of human physical presence, thereby raising questions about the status of the constructed, idealized image that lasts eternally. Consisting of photographic works and a four-channel soundscape, the installation takes over the exhibition space, immersing viewers in an unsettling atmosphere of vanity, of the passing show of life.

A BEGGARS BANQUET
Postponed from 31/10/20 to 26/03/20.

Due to the measures our government has taken to combat the pandemic, it's with a heavy heart we are obliged to announce that “A Beggars Banquet” will be postponed to 26/03/21. After having read the open letter of all Antwerp hospitals we can only say we, together with all cultural players out there, feel the need for solidarity once more. Let's hope these measures will bring the necessary relief soon. Until then, our focus will shift to the digital playground again, where we'd love to meet and inspire each other through art and art alone.

A BEGGARS BANQUET
31/10/20

After the PRE REOPENING during Borger one week earlier, GALLERY GALLERY invites you to the REOPENING during Antwerp Art Nocturne on October 31, 2020. GALLERY GALLERY organizes "A Beggars Banquet”, a one day group show curated by Rens Cools with Ian De Weerdt, Isabel Fredeus, Arne Jochems, Yen Proesmans and Christiaan Huybrechts.

The project poses the question what the future of GALLERY GALLERY as a "non-profit artist-run initiative" could look like. This question is prompted by the end of long during renovation and Covid-19 and in the context of the ever-shrinking project funding and the deliberate absence of commercial intentions. What better way to do so than through a group show with the requesting parties?

A MAN STERNLY CLEARING HIS THROAT
23/10/20 - 22/10/21

Next to the short-term projects that have taken place in recent years, GALLERY GALLERY launches a new concept. Each year, one artist will be invited to present a work that will be exhibited for one full academic year. The work will be on continuous display spanning all other projects and can be visited by appointment. Oscar Hugal has the honor of being the first to kick off this new series. The inauguration of A Man Sternly Clearing His Throat coincides with the pre reopening of a newly renovated GALLERY GALLERY during Borger on 23/10/20.
