<image:title>PROJECTS - THE META SHOW</image:title>
<image:caption>For the opening of GALLERY GALLERY, Rens Cools (Belgium, °1991) will be showing new works. Cools’s work has a history in a myriad of different media like sculpture, video, performance, installation and web art. In 2012, Rens Cools set up an artist initiative called GALLERY GALLERY. The platform started off as a web space presenting artists, with curated online exhibitions and live feeds of performances. In 2018, GALLERY GALLERY established a foothold in 2140 Antwerp (Borgerhout). This polyvalent project focuses on supporting and exhibiting research projects from different artistic disciplines. Rens Cools’s works often revolve around art for art’s sake. By dissecting different aspects of the arts, such as sculpture, painting, exhibition spaces and artistic curation, Rens Cools does research in a minimal and radical way. A significant part of his practice is expressed in the concept of 'embedded fiction', where he consciously takes on different roles in his own life so as to become reality. His show at GALLERY GALLERY will combine both. Rens Cools will dissect the architecture of the exhibition space, resulting in new visual work, all while assuming the role of gallery owner and curator.</image:caption>

<image:title>PROJECTS - ESSAIE DE (RE)PRESENTER SES TROIS MAANDEN VAN RESIDENTIE (2013)</image:title>
<image:caption>Darren Roshier, b. 1990 in Vevey (CH), lives and works in Brussels (BE) and Vevey (CH) From 2012 to 2016, Darren Roshier expressed his commitment in several complementary roles: artist, curator, cultural manager and politician. Through his artistic practice, he created a non-fictional character that would explore various sociological and professional aspects of being a young artist. Through an idiotic approach, he tried to be a good artist with the same obstinacy Buster Keaton would have had. He was elected in 2011 in his home town council. He participated in various commissions, from culture to urbanism. He presided over the RATS collective from 2014 to 2017 where he both curated various exhibitions and restructured various aspects of the association. These varied roles allowed him to develop a good understanding of the cultural system, from cultural policy to the creation of an artwork, where one field would nourish the other. Nevertheless, in 2016, he was confronted with the limits of this discipline crossover. As candidate to become the mayor of Vevey on the socialist list he faced a dilemma. As an artist, he could raise issues, and use his medium – art – to question his surrounding framework. As a politician – especially during a campaign – he had to give answers and convince the electors. He nevertheless decided to play the game and lead a traditional political campaign. He didn’t get elected; a few weeks later, Donald Trump did. This upheaval pushed him to undertake a research program in KASK (Ghent, BE) to better understand the links between political and artistic activity. His research focused on the notion of consensus and dissensus, on left wing populism and anti-establishment discourses, inspired by authors such as Chantal Mouffe, Jacques Rancière, Manuel Cervera-Marzal or Hito Steyerl. He finished his Master in June 2019. In parallel, he became an active member of the PTB-PVDA, the radical left in Belgium; where he coordinates local campaigns and does video editing for social media networks. His artistic activity – even if he makes no clear distinction between his political and artistic activity – now focuses on using a political strategy to experiment the limit of the contemporary art consensus. If « every critical gesture is quickly recuperated and neutralized by the forces of corporate capitalism. » as Chantal Mouffe wrote, producing critical artwork would directly be the consensus. Thus, which posture and type of discourse should contemporary art adopt in society? What would a left-wing populist anti-establishment artwork be? Since 2012, Darren Roshier participates to various exhibitions in Switzerland Belgium and France. He had residencies in AIR Antwerpen (Antwerp, BE) and Astérides (Marseille, FR). From 2015 to 2017 he was the Farº (Nyon, CH) associated artist. He participated to the swiss performance award and the swiss art awards, and won in 2014 the Kiefer Halbitzel prize.</image:caption>

<image:title>PROJECTS - Please Play by the Rules</image:title>
<image:caption>William Ludwig Lutgens (born in Belgium, 1991) skillfully handles different visual registers. Through drawings, paintings and installations, Lutgens transpires as a maker of powerful images by intertwining and layering of different styles and influences. Lutgens combines neodada-inspired collage techniques, design templates and cartoonesque drawing with an often expressive use of paint, and socially critical, politically charged content. For his installation ‘Please play by the rules’ at GALLERY GALLERY, Lutgens will show new works which simulate a street protest through the use of lifelike humanoid sculptures and uncanny scenery. This project is made possible by Flacc Workplace and will take place during the Antwerp Art Weekend 2018.</image:caption>

<image:title>PROJECTS - Twin Flames (2019)</image:title>
<image:caption>Twin Flames were Mathias MU and Yasmin Van der Rauwelaert. Their connection was multifaceted and manifested itself in different ways. For their project at GALLERY GALLERY their focus was on sound, image, performance and hand-poked tattoos. During the opening night, they organised a performance that the visitor could be part of by getting an original hand-poked tattoo.</image:caption>

<image:title>PROJECTS - STRUCTURAL FILM n°58 […] (2019)</image:title>
<image:caption>In the context of the exhibition Structural Film n°58 […] Rens Cools – the organiser – and Evelin Brosi & Elvis Bonier – the artist – drew up an exhibition agreement. The organiser agreed to keep the artist's film running during the exhibition. More specifically, this meant that the organiser agreed to click the computer mouse (continuously) in order to switch between frames. On top of that, the organiser agreed to click at least 6000 times each hour of the exhibition and to click when visitors were present in the exhibition space. If previous mouse-conditions were not met, the organiser agreed to close the exhibition space during future Antwerp Art Weekends.</image:caption>

Valuing process over product, during a two-day public event, they invited the visitor to take part in The Shape Shifts, an ever-changing constellation of ideas, shapes and materials. Together, the artists created a sequence of public spaces for conversation. With contributions by Larissa Cluzet, Veroniek Van Samang, Haruka Hashido, Ines Laukkanen, Kai Lossgott, Stefan Bakmand Andersen, Laura Barnicoat, Alexey Shlyk and Ignace Cami.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Next to the short-term projects that had taken place in recent years, GALLERY GALLERY launched a new concept. One artist was invited to install a work that was exhibited for one full academic year. The work was on continuous display spanning all other projects. Oscar Hugal presented A Man Sternly Clearing His Throat (2020 – 2021), a single-channel sound installation which distributes the sound of “a man sternly clearing his throat” once every minute throughout the exhibition space.</image:caption>

<image:title>PROJECTS - SWAN SONG (2021)</image:title>
<image:caption>Swan Song was a site-specific, total installation and the first instalment of Alexey Shlyk and Ben Van den Berghe’s ongoing project Virtual Escape. Consisting of various photographic works and a four-channel soundscape, the installation dealt with the disturbing impact of image technology on the necessity of human physical presence. It thereby raised questions about the status of the constructed, idealised image that lasts eternally.</image:caption>

<image:title>PROJECTS - CABINET OF HEARTS (2021)</image:title>
<image:caption>Next to the short-term projects that took place in recent years, GALLERY GALLERY launched a new concept where one artist was invited to install a work in direct relation to the public space that was on continuous display during summer closing, from the beginning of July to the end of September. GALLERY GALLERY invited Che Go Eun to kick off this new series with Cabinet of Hearts. Combining influences of a genre of Korean painting from the 18th Century and the European “Wunderkammer”, the digital artist presented six site-specific panels on the windows of GALLERY GALLERY.</image:caption>

<image:title>ABOUT</image:title>
<image:caption>In 2012, Rens Cools set up an artist-run initiative called GALLERY GALLERY that debuted as a platform for emerging artists, through curated online exhibitions and livestreams of performances. Initially leading a nomadic life in Antwerp, GALLERY GALLERY established a foothold in Borgerhout, Antwerp in 2018. The non-profit artist-run curatorial project organised short-term events focused on (post-) conceptual art until mid-2022.</image:caption>
